Central Heating Systems Explained
Combi Boiler

Combi Boiler

can be powered by gas or electric

A Combi Boiler is the most common type, it provides instant hot water and controls your central heating. A combi boiler is compact and doesn’t require any additional water tanks and is often located in a kitchen, but can also be in the garage, a bedroom or cupboard. As a combi boiler heats water directly from your mains, proving instant hot water from your tap, they’re energy efficient and cost affective to run. Perfect for small to medium homes with one bathroom.

Standard Boiler

sometimes also called a Regular boiler

A standard boiler is ideal for larger homes with more than one bathroom, it is also helps if you have low water pressure. This system requires two separate tanks in addition to the boiler; one for cold water (with a tank located in the loft) and a hot water storage cylinder.

no water tank in the loft

A system boiler system is very similar to a regular system without the second cold water tank in the loft (you’ll still have a hot water storage cylinder). This is a space saving option to a regular boiler and is ideal for homes with more than one bathroom as it can deliver hot water to multiple taps and they’re also economical to run.

Back Boiler

will be located behind a fireplace

Often referred to as BBU (Back Boiler Unit), this system provides both central heating and hot water will be located behind a fireplace which could be powers by gas, electric or fuel. This is likely to be an older system if you convert to a gas combi system you’re likely to benefit from energy efficiencies.
